Separate the fabric requirement from the recycled claim

A recycled-wool enquiry has two connected tasks: select a fabric that works in the garment and establish what evidence supports the proposed recycled-content claim. A fabric can have suitable hand and appearance while its claim documentation remains unresolved. Keep these decisions separate until both are supported.

Specify whether you require recycled wool within the blend, a stated total recycled percentage or a named certification requirement. These requests are different. Ask for the full composition and identify exactly which component is claimed as recycled; do not assume that every fibre in a “recycled wool blend” is recycled.

Identify the claim you intend to make

Write the proposed product or customer claim in plain language before asking for documents. Check whether the requirement concerns recycled material input, chain of custody or another defined matter. An environmental preference and a documented certification claim should not be merged into an unqualified “sustainable” label.

Use the relevant scheme’s current official guidance for terminology and scope. Textile Exchange distinguishes scope and transaction evidence in its standards system. That distinction can help structure questions, but it does not establish that Fred or a selected fabric is certified under any scheme.

Check documents against the actual transaction

If certification is required, examine the organisation, activities, product scope, validity and issuing details of any scope document. Ask what transaction or product documentation is applicable to the planned order and how it will connect to the selected article and quantity.

A scope certificate alone should not be treated as proof for every shipment. Conversely, a document with a familiar logo should not be rejected or accepted without checking its purpose. Verify through the scheme or issuer’s official process where available, and resolve missing links before making a claim.

Evaluate performance without assumptions about recycled fibres

Select the fabric by its complete composition, yarn, structure and finish and by the intended garment. Compare physical swatches and representative seams. Recycled content alone does not establish softness, durability, colour consistency or an appropriate price.

Define relevant testing and acceptance requirements for the selected article. If an alternative changes recycled content or fibre composition, revisit both the garment trial and claim evidence. A sample approved for hand-feel does not approve recycled-content labelling or the order’s documentation.

Illustrative case: good sample, incomplete claim evidence

A buyer likes a recycled-wool blend sample and wants to mention recycled content on the finished product. The supplier provides composition information and an organisation document, but the buyer cannot yet connect the intended claim to the selected order.

The buyer keeps fabric evaluation moving while requesting the missing article and transaction evidence. It does not publish the claim merely because the swatch was accepted. If the required documentation cannot be supplied, the buyer must reconsider the proposed claim or fabric requirement. This example describes a verification gap and does not imply any actual supplier certification.

Send a recycled-wool evidence request

Explain the intended garment and exact claim requirement together. Ask what can be supported before accepting a commercial offer that assumes documentation will follow. Keep unanswered evidence questions visible in the sample and order discussion.

Recycled-wool evidence questions

Does a recycled-wool name prove the entire blend is recycled?

No. Ask for the full composition and the exact component and percentage claimed as recycled, with evidence appropriate to the claim.

Can an organisation certificate cover my order automatically?

Check the scheme, scope and the documentation linking the selected product or transaction. Organisation-level scope is not automatically evidence for every shipment.

Can I approve the sample while documents are pending?

You can record a limited approval such as hand or appearance. Keep certification and claim approval unresolved, and do not imply that sample acceptance authorises product labelling.
